How the planner works

  1. Typical weather for your exact dates. Each city has 1991–2020 averages for 36 periods a year (days 1–10, 11–20 and 21–end of every month), so a trip from 25 October to 3 November blends late-October and early-November conditions instead of using one monthly number.
  2. How it feels, not just the thermometer. Wind and humidity are folded into a feels-like temperature, and the gap between afternoon highs and night-time lows decides whether you need an evening layer.
  3. Transparent clothing rules. Feels-like bands set your base outfit (hot ≥28°C, warm 20–27°C, mild 13–19°C, cool 6–12°C, cold below 6°C); rain on two or more days in ten adds a rain layer, four or more a proper waterproof; snow on one day in ten or more adds insulated boots.
  4. Quantities from trip length. Basics scale with the number of days (capped at about five days if you can do laundry), bottoms are counted for rewearing, and hot, muggy trips get an extra top.

The climate data comes from Copernicus ERA5-Land and ERA5 reanalysis via Open-Meteo open data (CC BY 4.0) — see our methodology. For the full picture of a city, our month-by-month guides add local dress codes, footwear for the streets you'll walk and what locals actually wear.

Frequently asked questions

How does the What to Wear Planner decide what I should pack?

It looks up typical weather for every day of your trip — afternoon highs, night-time lows, how warm or cold it feels with wind and humidity, rain and snow frequency — and applies simple, published clothing rules: for example, a light layer for cool evenings and a warm sweater when nights feel colder than about 13°C, a waterproof jacket when rain falls on four or more days in ten, and insulated boots when snow is common.

Is this a weather forecast?

No. It uses 1991–2020 climate averages, which describe what is normal for your dates. That is the right basis for planning weeks or months ahead. Check the real forecast a few days before you leave and adjust the last few items.

Why are my dates split into early, mid and late month?

Weather changes within a month — early October in Southern Europe can be 4–5°C warmer than late October. The planner uses separate averages for days 1–10, 11–20 and 21–end of each month, then weights them by how many trip days fall in each.

How many clothes should I pack for a week?

Without laundry, a typical week means six or seven sets of underwear and socks, five or six tops and two or three bottoms you can rewear. If you can do laundry, pack for about five days and rewash. The planner adjusts these numbers for heat (more tops), cold (fewer, warmer layers) and dressy evenings.

Where does the climate data come from?

From Copernicus ERA5-Land and ERA5 reanalysis — 30 years of hourly weather data — read via Open-Meteo's open data (CC BY 4.0) and adjusted to each city's elevation. Modelled afternoon highs can read 1–2°C below airport weather-station records, so the planner errs slightly on the warm-layer side.

Can I save or share my list?

Yes. Your trip, edited quantities, extra items and packed checkmarks are saved automatically in this browser, so you can return and carry on packing without an account. Use Share link to send your trip and customized list; packed checkmarks stay on your device. Copy list and Print include your quantities, extra items and packing progress. Browser storage must be available to save your list.

Can I change quantities and add my own items?

Yes. Change the quantity beside any item and add up to 30 extra items, such as a phone charger or travel documents. Remove extra items individually, uncheck all packed items, or restore suggested quantities while keeping your extra items. Each combination of destination, dates and trip options has its own saved list.
